LAPAROSCOPY

First, a thick needle is inserted into the abdominal cavity by a 5-10 mm incision through the umbilicus. With the help of this needle, the abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to a certain pressure. This space allows us to have a nice view of pelvic and abdominal structures. When sufficient intraabdominal pressure is set, this needle is pulled out and a telescope is introduced into the abdominal cavity. Once clear image is obtained  and the pressure is stable , the right and left secondary trocars are entered under direct vision depending on the type of operation. Operation is carried out with the help of hand tools which are inserted from these ports. At the end of the process, all trocar is withdrawn and the gas in the abdominal cavity is emptied. Skin incisions are repaired and the operation is terminated.

With the advances in technology and surgical experience, it has been possible to perform nearly all kinds of gynecological operations with laparoscopic method over the years. The most common indications for use are;

         o Diagnostic purposes in infertility or chronic pain

         o Ectopic Pregnancy

         o Ovarian cysts

         o In the process of IVF treatment, if there is liquid collection within the fallopian tubes,

         o Removal of the fibroids

         o Removal of Uterus and ovaries

         o Some urinary incontinence surgeries

         o Cervical, uterine and ovarian cancer surgeries

According to the extent and duration of surgery patients are discharged either on the same day or the following day. Return to daily life would be possible in 4-7 days after surgery.

During the first 48 hours the patient may experience some  shoulder pain due to pressure on the diaphragm membrane of the remainin gas remaining in the abdominal cavity. This pain passes over time and painkillers may help in case.

Usually there is no stitch to be taken. No special dressing required. The bandage on the wound can be opened after 48 hours and the patient can take shower.
